A massive brass barrelled flintlock blunderbuss

A massive brass barrelled flintlock blunderbuss or musketoon by William McLay of Greenock c 1800. The two stage barrel is engraved on the octagonal breech Wm.McLAY Gun Maker GREENOCK, it is struck twice with the maker's rectangular poincon McLAY GREENOCK, and with a London proofmark. The lock of military type is signed by the maker. The gun is fitted with brass furniture, the military style trigger guard is engraved with a starburst and foliage, and the buttcap tang with flowering foliage. The halfstock has a chequered grip, a horn forecap and a vacant silver escutcheon. The gun retains its original horn tipped wooden ramrod. Good age patina overall.
