An extraordinary wooden sword hilt
An extraordinary wooden sword hilt dated 1747 and built for a Moro or Sulu blade from the Philippines. Carved in the form of a dragon’s head, upon the crown is carved the cross of the Knights of St John of Jerusalem, and the date 1749 above the nose. The neck is carved with deeply incised scales, separate crosspiece. The scales, cross of the Knights of St John of Jerusalem, and other sunken details are all filled with red sealing wax (some now missing).
