A detatched visor from a close helmet
A detatched visor from a close helmet, probably German and certainly mid 16th Century. Pierced with a pair of sights, the breaths comprise 6 vertical openings of graduated sizes on the left. The openings for the privots have been altered during its working life, probably at the same time that the etched and gilt decoration was removed (traces remain close to the right hand pivot opening). The surface is very lightly rusted, and the visor is of a substantial weight and robustness; it would respond very well to cleaning.
