A rare Scottish engraved flattened cow horn powder flask, dated 1731. Engraved on both sides with a pair of thistles beneath a stylised crown, with the date 1731 and some simple geometric ornament engraved using a pair of dividers. On one side is engraved the initial W, on the other I.B. Good age patina overall, wooden base plug now missing.
Overall length 7” (17.5cms)
These flasks have evolved from larger and more elaborately decorated 17th century flasks. They are closely associated with N.E. Scotland, particularly Aberdeenshire, Angus and Mearns. 18th century flasks are rare, particularly those made after the 1717 disarming act.
