A Scottish officer's basket hilted broadsword of the 72nd Highlanders (The Duke of Albany's Own Highlanders) by Johnstone, Sackville St, London & Dawson St, Dublin. The double edge blade cut with 2 fullers and etched with crowned VR cypher, and crowned 72nd HIGHLANDERS surrounding a bugle and thistles, and all within a profuse scrolling foliage. The steel basket hilt of regulation pattern, fluted bun shaped pommel, the grip covered with sharkskin and bound with twisted copper wire. Retaining its original buckskin liner covered with scarlet tunic cloth, and its original cotton fringe. Contained in its steel scabbard with twin hanging rings and ball finial. Good dark shiny age patina to hilt and scabbard.
