A Victorian 1897 pattern Royal Engineers officer's sword. The blade by Henry Wilkinson, Pall Mall, London, No 36276 is etched with the crowned Royal Arms, regimental title, mottoes and device amidst scrolling foliage, together with the owner's initials M.N. The regulation hilt and steel dress scabbard with some plated finish, the grip is covered with fishskin and bound with twisted silver wire.

Wilkinsons confirm that this sword was sold to Major M. Nathan 7.12.1898. Matthew Nathan R.E. Lieut 1880, Capt 1889, Maj 1898, Governor & CinC Sierra Leone 1900, Governor & CinC Gold Coast Colony 1900-1903, Governor and CinC Hong Kong 1903-1907, Governor and CinC Natal 1907-09, various Government appointments, Governor of Queensland 1920.
