Description:
A good Scottish basket hilted backsword, early 18th century. The blade cut with a pair of deep fullers on each side, each fuller is deeply stamped X ANDRIA X FARARA X. The blade becomes double edged for the last 4". The basket hilt is composed of bars of rounded section and panels pierced with heart shaped openings and round holes, confined within incised linear borders. The conical pommel is incised with 3 pairs of lines. The fruitwood grip is vertically fluted. Retained in its scarce original leather scabbard, tooled with 7 saltires separated by tooled divisions and ending in a downward pointing arrow. The chape is missing; the grip, locket and frog hook are all later working life replacements, there are several cracks to the basket. Good age patina overall
