A very fine detatched Italian wheellock lock
A very fine detatched Italian wheellock lock of outstanding quality by Giovan Antonio Gavacciolo, first half of the 17th Century. The lock is deeply struck with the maker's mark SOLA SOLE GAVDET surrounding the initials G:A:G together with a phoenix, sun and tree. All the component parts are exquisitely formed, filed, polished and finished. The overall patina is shiny grey with some traces of original polish. See Nolfo di Carpegna "Brescian Firearms" 1997, pp 63-65 for Gavacciolo's details, and Pl XLI, 64 for the mark. Antonio Petrini proclaims Gavacciolo as the best lockmaker of his time and the most gifted master of chiselling in low relief ("L'Arts Fabrile", 1642).
Length of lockplate including finial 8" (20cms)
