A good 19th Century Sudanese Mahdist period sword Kaskara. The broad straight heavy blade is cut with one long and 2 short fullers, struck with "man in the moon" maker's marks, and deeply engraved with inscriptions in Arabic, together with stylised figures, animals and the date 185(0?). The brass crosspiece has swollen quillon terminals and down pointing langets. The grip and scabbard are covered with the skin of a Nile crocodile. Good age patina.
