A good rare 19th Century Sudanese Mahdist period Dervish cavalry helmet
A good rare 19th Century Sudanese Mahdist period Dervish cavalry helmet, probably Baggara, made from leather and Mamluk/Ottoman mail 16th/17th Century. The mail is made from rivetted links, and is formed as two broad bands extending over the shoulders and a third which extends beyond the neck to the upper back; the skull is gathered towards the back of the crown and is sewn to its cotton liner. The helmet is supported by a leather ectoskeletal structure which incorporates padded bands and a crest of sewn leather pouches presumably containing Khoranic charms or amulets, and is secured by its leather chinstrap. Good age patina.
