A heavy German/Danish breastplate of good form c 1580. Formed with a distinct medial ridge with a keel shaped “peascod” projection, the neck and arm cusps with raised turns, and with a deep skirt pierced for the tassets. Deeply struck with a musket ball “ proof”, the waist and shoulders are pierced for retaining straps. The outer surface retains much of its working life blued finish over polishing marks applied at the Tojhus, Kobonhavn.

Provenance: From an extensive series of nearly identical breastplates retained at the Tojhus and disposed of by exchange with the Tojhusmuseet, Kobenhavn, Denmark
