A good African Songye (Nsapo) Chieftain’s ceremonial axe
A good African Songye (Nsapo) Chieftain’s ceremonial axe, 19th Century. The iron head with punched decoration is supported by 2 twisted sidebars and a central column chiselled with 2 stylised human masks. The wooden haft is entirely sheathed with sheet copper. Excellent age patina.
